Whether it’s the irreverent silliness of “The Other Guys,” the sci-fi splashiness of “Men in Black” or action hero machismo of the “Rush Hour” series, none of them would work if not for the comedic energy both stars funnel into the other. It also means there’s an enormous amount of pressure on the two stars to turn on the charm, and they deliver. The success of any buddy comedy is reliant on the believability and chemistry of the leads paired opposite each other. The movie makes sense from scene to scene, but with all the chasing around after thugs and the shooting at thugs and the making wisecracks at the expense of thugs, it doesn’t amount to much in the end.įor most of “2 Guns,” it’s not clear who, if anyone, is a good guy, and that means our sympathies spend the whole movie in search of someone worthy of them. “2 Guns” does not have one of those scripts like, say, “The Usual Suspects,” in which everything ends up falling into place in a clever, logical solution. At least two squads of goons, led by Edward James Olmos and Bill Paxton, would also like to find that money. Who they play in the movie is complicated, but complex identities aside, they are forced to work together in, first, an attempt to rob a bank and, later, an attempt to retrieve the huge pile of cash that vanished after the robbery. They may not be Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn, but they’re at least as engaging a pair as Mel Gibson and Danny Glover in “2 Guns,” which contrasts Washington’s cool charisma with Wahlberg’s hilarious overeagerness.
